Dog Christmas Gifts And Holiday Treats

Tuesday December 06, 2011 06:53am

According to Petfinder.com, out of the pet owners that they surveyed, 63% give their dogs Christmas gifts, approximately $5 billion dollars are spent on pets for holiday gifts, 40% of dog owners hang stockings for their dogs, and 27% of pet owners take their pet to see Santa for a holiday photo!  I have to admit I am definitely one of the statistics!  Each one of my dogs has a stocking!

I am assuming if you are reading my blog you are one of the 63% so here are my suggestions for what you should get your dog for Christmas this year.

Here are a couple toys that I recommend:

The No Stuffing Toys:  I have to admit I have not had my dogs play with these yet but they will be under my tree for the dogs this year.  How can you go wrong with a toy for your dog that you will NOT have to clean up stuffing after they are done playing with it!  The best place I have seen to buy these toys (price wise) is www.PetEdge.com  They have all different varieties of these toys including holiday ones as you can see by the picture.  Pet Edge has GREAT prices on many dogs toys and supplies.

The KONG:  I am sure most of you know that this is not a new toy on the market but my dogs love them and it gives them something to do on those days that they have to be at home alone longer then I like.  Again, the best prices I have seen for these are also at www.PetEdge.com or Amazon.

Some people tell me thier dogs don't like the Kong, but I think that they just haven't put the right stuff in it.  My dogs love them with a dog cookie and a bit of peanut butter.  Or when I have extra time I will soak some of their dog food in water and stuff the Kong with the moistened food.  I then put the Kong in the freezer making it a little harder for the dog to get the food out so the treat last longer.

If you are on a budget you can always make your dog cookies... I have made the following recipe for my dogs a few times and they love them and I love how they smell!

Ginger Bones

4 Cups White Flour

2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour

1 Cup Molasses

1 Cup Water

1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil

4 TBLs Ground Ginger

2 TSPs Ground Cinnamon

1 TSP Ground Cloves

Directions:

1.  Mix all dry ingredients together

2.  Combine all wet ingredients with dry ingredients until well combined

3.  Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface until is is about 1/4in thick (the dough with be crumbly but will stick together nicely when rolled out)

4.  Use cookie cutters to cut out your dog's favorite shapes

5.  Bake cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet for 30-35 minute s in a 325 degree oven

Your dogs will love you even more after enjoying some of these toys and cookies!!!
